Ask someone what AI is today, and most will say ChatGPT. Ask a question, get an answer. That mental model isn't wrong - it's just dangerously incomplete. Something much bigger is happening underneath the surface, and it's showing up in a number most people aren't tracking yet.

Tokens are the currency of AI - every word processed, every task executed. A typical chatbot user consumes 10,000–30,000 tokens per day. An active user of an agentic AI platform like OpenClaw (currently hitting 1.5 million downloads per week) consumes 500,000–2 million. My own usage runs around 1.2 million per day.
That's 50 to 200 times more per user. This isn't a rounding error - it's the signal that a category shift is already underway.
Not growth within an existing paradigm, but the emergence of an entirely new one.
Chatbot vs. Agent:
Not a Degree of Difference
A chatbot is reactive - you supply the input, interpret the output, and do the work in between. The AI is a sophisticated autocomplete; the human is still the engine.
An AI agent is different in kind, not just capability. Given a goal, it plans multi-step workflows, calls tools, browses the web, writes and executes code, and loops through tasks with minimal human involvement.
Consider what this looks like in practice:
Each of those agent workflows consumes hundreds of thousands of tokens. Each chatbot interaction consumes hundreds. Multiply that across millions of users and the infrastructure implications become exponential.

When AI becomes infrastructure, it stops being something you interact with and starts being something that runs processes on your behalf - continuously, in parallel, at scale. It becomes more analogous to a cloud computing environment than a productivity app. The compute demand, the data centre footprint, the energy requirements: all of it scales accordingly.
This is why the data centre investment cycle we're seeing isn't a bubble.
Hyperscalers and infrastructure investors are responding to a real and accelerating demand signal - one that grows not just with user counts, but with the per-user token consumption that comes with agentic workloads.
Businesses that treat AI as a chatbot-level tool while competitors treat it as infrastructure will face a compounding gap. The transition is already underway - visible in token logs and capital spend long before it surfaces in the mainstream narrative.
We are not yet at mass adoption of agentic AI, but early adoption phases of infrastructure-level technologies tend to end abruptly, followed by rapid mainstream uptake once the tooling matures and the cost of entry falls. That maturation is happening now. Some are pursuing agentic AI adoption faster than others.
